The diversity of learning situations in nursing homes

Nursing homes offer a multitude of good learning situations in which student nurses will meet patients with different nursing and care needs.  Students who have little experience of nursing or patient contact prior to the clinical placement period and may find learning situations more challenging compared to students who have more experience.

Examples of good learning situations in nursing homes for first-year students:

  • Personal hygiene 
  • Different meal situations
  • Interaction and communication with patients and relatives
  • Activation and moving patients using various aids
  • Documentation of nursing care
  • Oral report
  • Care of terminally ill patients
  • Interaction and communication with patients who have dementia
  • Collaboration with colleagues and other healthcare professionals
  • Performing practical skills (BP, pulse, temp, SIC/CIC, wound care, etc.)
  • Tasks in washrooms and clean storage
