Supervision before, during and after learning situations

Supervision before a learning situation:
Supervision before a learning situation focuses on the planning and preparation of the work or task to be carried out. Supervision before a learning situation is important for the students’ sense of security, their learning outcomes, and can give you as a nurse mentor insight into the students’ platform of knowledge.
Supervision during a learning situation:
Supervision during a learning situation focuses on explanation and demonstration while the action or task is being performed. During a learning situation, you as the nurse mentor can be an observer, assistant or the person who demonstrates for the students. It is important to be observant, provide support, and instruct when needed.
Supervision after a learning situation:
Supervision after a learning situation focuses on the action or task that was performed. Here, the students’ reflections on the situation are emphasised to stimulate new insight. In the follow-up supervision, you as a nurse mentor give your feedback to the students based on your observations and assessments.
A reflection case related to supervision before, during and after a learning situation
We have prepared a reflection case with the intention of helping you to reflect on your own mentorship practice before, during and after learning situations, which is exemplified here through a morning care session:

Good advice:
Agree with the students which areas of skills should be emphasised in specific learning situations
The areas of skills that are emphasised should be adapted to the student nurses’ needs and learning outcomes.
Clarify what type of role you should have as a nurse mentor in different learning situations
Depending on who the student is and where they are in their learning process, you can be an observer, demonstrate a procedure, lead the task, or be the student’s assistant.
