
Students’ prerequisite knowledge
Before student nurses start their clinical placement period at nursing homes, they have acquired knowledge in the following areas:

- Anatomy and physiology
- Microbiology and infection control
- The history, development, and platform of knowledge of the nursing profession
- Central phenomena and concepts in the practice of nursing (such as care, health, suffering and dignity)
- Nursing theories
- Key values and professional ethics in nursing
- Basic needs
- The nursing process as a systematic working method and framework for documentation
- Communication and interaction with elderly patients, with particular emphasis on patients with dementia
- The aging process and the special needs of the elderly
- Legislation relating to patients and healthcare personnel in nursing homes and/or assisted living facilities
The students have also received training and acquired knowledge in various practical skills prior to the clinical placement period. in a nursing home. These are skills related to:

- Personal hygiene care (where students have trained in bed care)
- Oral care and making the bed both with and without a patient
- Respiration, blood pressure and pulse, as well as temperature regulation (ABCDE Principles)
- Systematic clinical assessments and examinations
- Elimination (Sterile intermittent catheterisation and urine dipsticks)
- Activity and moving patients (with and without a lift, using various aids)
- Nutrition (Adaptation of meal situation using various aids, including dietary interview, and mapping of nutritional needs)
- Infection control (Students have received training in washing hands, disinfection, and use of sterile gloves)
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
«Through clinical placement and supervision, the students will work on linking theory and knowledge to different practical learning situations.«
