Students’ prerequisite knowledge

Before student nurses start their clinical placement period at nursing homes, they have acquired knowledge in the following areas:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Microbiology and infection control
  • The history, development, and platform of knowledge of the nursing profession
  • Central phenomena and concepts in the practice of nursing (such as care, health, suffering and dignity)
  • Nursing theories
  • Key values and professional ethics in nursing
  • Basic needs
  • The nursing process as a systematic working method and framework for documentation
  • Communication and interaction with elderly patients, with particular emphasis on patients with dementia
  • The aging process and the special needs of the elderly
  • Legislation relating to patients and healthcare personnel in nursing homes and/or assisted living facilities

The students have also received training and acquired knowledge in various practical skills prior to the clinical placement period.  in a nursing home. These are skills related to:

  • Personal hygiene care (where students have trained in bed care)
  • Oral care and making the bed both with and without a patient
  • Respiration, blood pressure and pulse, as well as temperature regulation (ABCDE Principles)
  • Systematic clinical assessments and examinations  
  • Elimination (Sterile intermittent catheterisation and urine dipsticks)
  • Activity and moving patients (with and without a lift, using various aids)
  • Nutrition (Adaptation of meal situation using various aids, including dietary interview, and mapping of nutritional needs)
  • Infection control (Students have received training in washing hands, disinfection, and use of sterile gloves)
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation 

«Through clinical placement and supervision, the students will work on linking theory and knowledge to different practical learning situations.«
