Purpose of assessment
Assessment is a continuous and compulsory part of clinical nursing education and is intended to stimulate professional and personal growth in the students. Assessment during clinical placement has two overarching objectives:
1
Stimulate learning and development
Assessment emphasises raising awareness of what the individual student is confident about, is able to master, and what the student must specifically work on to develop expected skills and achieve their learning outcomes. This type of process assessment helps raise students’ awareness of their own learning and development and forms the basis for further supervision.
2
Assess the student’s skills in relation to learning outcomes
Based on an overall assessment, the student’s skills are assessed in relation to the learning outcomes for the clinical placement period. This assessment is characterised as a performance assessment. The period of clinical placement is assessed as being passed or failed. Overall assessment includes the student’s academic, relational, and personal skills.
